Thompson School District “Goes Live” with Loveland Municipal Broadband
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 11, 2025
Loveland, CO – Beginning this month, the Thompson School District (TSD) has officially transitioned Loveland-based schools to the City of Loveland’s municipal broadband network, Pulse, a move that will reduce monthly costs while increasing reliability and flexibility.
Dating back to 2019, TSD began vetting a possible collaboration with Pulse to provide broadband service to Big Thompson Elementary School, replacing the slower and less reliable wireless point-to-point connection that had been their only viable option. In 2020, TSD brought BTES up on Pulse, bringing them up to the level of networking required to foster a heavily online-based curriculum.
Starting in 2024, Pulse began the fiber buildout to reach the remaining sites within their territory, digging, trenching and boring through the winter to meet a tight deadline for cutover of service in March. “Outdoor and indoor fiber crews were extremely professional and efficient, working around our busy schedules for months.” says J.D. Walker, Sr. Network Engineer with TSD. He adds “Pulse’s engineering team bent over backwards to make sure we had a smooth transition, working through the night multiple times to ensure no staff or students would experience any outages while we made the change.”
By partnering with Pulse, the district has also provided additional connections to support ESports and cyber security networks with some of the Loveland area schools.
“This is the kind of project that municipal broadband was built for,” said Brieana Reed-Harmel, Broadband Manager for Pulse. “There is a certain pride that City of Loveland employees, like those of us at Pulse, have in making sure that the schools and students of our community are well taken care of and that they have opportunities equal to, or better than, any other district in the country.”
With this infrastructure update, TSD will continue to support its 1:1 student device program and digital learning opportunities, ensuring that all students have reliable access to online resources during the school day.
