In the Internet Olympics, who would take home the Gold for Speed?

With the 2024 Summer Olympics right around the corner, we thought it would be fun to see who would take home the gold medal if Internet Speed was a competition.

The following results are all based on fixed broadband speeds from June 2024 as reported by Ookla’s Speedest: https://www.speedtest.net/global-index

The Frontrunners: Blazing Speeds

In the pole position with a median download speed of 285.02, we have Singapore! Using the median speed of the entire country, Singapore sets the bar for the overall fastest internet speeds and would take home the Gold medal for Internet Speed in our Internet Olympics.

The United Arab Emirates is right on Singapore’s heels and claims the Silver medal, with a median download speed of 283.34 Mbps.

The Middle of the Pack: A Steady Stream

Hong Kong would earn the Bronze medal with a median download speed of 271.05 Mbps.

Chile, the United States, Iceland, France, and Thailand are all worthy contenders with median download speeds greater than 230 Mbps.

Team USA

The United States of America ranked 5th worldwide when it comes to internet speeds, with a median download speed of 244.68 Mbps. That’s substantially faster than the global median download speed of 93.93 Mbps.

Pulse is proud to have recently been named the 2nd Fastest ISP in the USA by PCMag for the second year in a row (2023 and 2024). With a PCMag Speed Index of 770.3 Mbps, Pulse is truly delivering gold-medal speeds! (The PCMag Speed Index is calculated as the median of 80% Download Speed + 20% Upload Speed from the results of a custom Ookla speed test.)

The Hurdle: Battling for Bandwidth

Let’s not forget the nations still facing hurdles in the internet speed race. Many countries still have median download speeds below 25 Mbps, making tasks like video conferencing or downloading large files a test of patience. Cuba has the lowest median download speed at 2.79 Mbps, with Afghanistan (3.56 Mbps) and Syria (4.77 Mbps) not far behind.

Beyond Speed

Don’t forget, good internet is not just about speed. Other key factors include reliability, latency, or data caps. Imagine landing a video interview for your dream job, only to have the internet drop right in the middle of it. That’s why countries like Japan, with a relatively “average” download speed of 193.54 Mbps, often rank highly in internet quality due to their exceptional reliability.

The Closing Ceremony: Local World-Class Internet

While it’s fun to see how we compare to the rest of the globe, Pulse customers can rest assured that they have world-class internet right here in Northern Colorado. We’ve been ranked as the 2nd Fastest ISP in the USA by PCMag in both 2023 and 2024, and the Best Gaming Quality ISP by PCMag in 2024. Northern Coloradans have access to some of the best internet in the world right here!
