The Nuggets are headed to the Finals for the first time in their franchise history! The first-seeded Nuggets, who finished the with a record of 53-29, defeated the Lakers 113-111 to secure the 4-0 series sweep and guarantee their inaugural berth in the championship round.
The Nuggets and Lakers have met in the Conference Finals previously, in 2020. The Lakers ended up prevailing in that meeting, with LeBron James and Anthony Davis proving to be too much for the Nuggets to handle. Los Angeles went on to win the title against the Heat after defeating Denver 4-1 in the 7-game series. In the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Nuggets played the Timberwolves and the Suns, defeating both 4-1 and 4-2 in games played, respectively.
Superstar Nikola Jokić leads the Nuggets, and averaged 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists in the regular season. That was good enough to finish second in MVP voting behind eventual winner Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers. Jokić won back-to-back Most Valuable Player awards in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons. Jokić, the Center who hails from Serbia, was an unlikely superstar as he was chosen late in the second round of the draft, where players of his caliber rarely are found. Since breaking into the league, however, he has elevated the Denver team to another level entirely.
Jamal Murray, who has been with the Nuggets since he was drafted by the team in 2016, provides a potent second punch for Jokic. Murray averaged 20.0/4.0/6.2 in the regular season, and has been able to bring his play to a higher level in the playoffs, averaging 27.9/6.2/5.6. He has been integral in the Nuggets success.
The Nuggets have a deep roster behind their one-two punch, with key contributions from Michael Porter, Jr, who was drafted by the team in 2018, and Aaron Gordon, who the team acquired in a trade with the Magic in 2021. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Thomas Bryant, Jeff Green, Reggie Jackson, and Christian Braun play roles in the team as well to help them round out the Finals bound roster. Head Coach Michael Malone leads the team, as he has since 2015.
Denver will play the Heat in the Finals starting June 1, 2023 with all of the games being shown live on ABC. Watch as Jokić, Murray, and the team attempt to win their first national title and bring a championship back to Denver.
